Washed My Feet In Holiness

We all know the story of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet.

If you don’t, let me explain.

Jesus is the king of Nazareth. The Lord of Lords. He is God’s only Son.

And one day, Jesus realizes he doesn’t have much more time on Earth, He knows He’s about to go to the Father again.

Jesus kneeled onto his own knees and began washing the twelve disciples’ feet. One at a time, using the towel that was wrapped around His own waist to wipe them dry.

I know that doesn’t sound very interesting.

‘Jesus washing the disciples’ feet isn’t that important.’

‘It’s just one more thing He did on Earth.’

Except it’s not.

Every time Jesus did an extraordinary act, He did it with His hands, His voice, His body.

He touched the water and it became wine.

He spoke to the storm and it obeyed.

He hung on a cross and died.

But each of these acts has their similarities and differences to Jesus washing the disciples’ feet.

Similarities include:

  • Whatever Jesus did on earth was for our sake.

  • Jesus always did acts like this where everyone could see Him.

But the differences come along like:

  • Jesus never kneeled to another man before. Not even Christian’s kneel to another man (I mean, political monarchs are different...I think you get the point).

  • This was not an extraordinary act. Jesus used oil and water and scraped the dirt off His children’s feet himself. This was not an act of God’s power, it was a show of kindness.

  • Everyone got their feet washed, that was just life. But you never washed your servants’ feet.

This all goes to prove that what Jesus did here was not normal.

To wash your servants’ feet was to lower yourself to their level. Do you see? The only reason Jesus did this was to show that He (God) is not only the most powerful being in the universe. Jesus is also a servant. And He serves us without question.

John 13:12-20 ‘When he [Jesus] had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread will raise his heel against me.’ I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. Truly truly I say to you, whoever receives the one who I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.’

Do you see why it’s such an interesting piece of scripture? Do you see why it was so important?

I do….

Stay faithful, children.

Thank you Claudia, for shining a light on the characteristics of Jesus.

With this knowledge, when a situation arises, we can ask ourselves, 'What Would Jesus Do?'.

WWJD, indeed. 💗

P.S. Is that a picture of your Bible? It reminds me of my paternal grandmother's Bible... Her pages had highlighting & notes, much like yours... It's nice to see!

Thank you.

Yes that is my Bible. I’ve been studying more lately and taking notes/highlighting has really helped nail the information into my head. I think it’s making a difference, at least. :)
