Seven Things The Lord Hates

When I say this, you are thinking: ‘Oh, the seven deadly sins!’
No.
No, not really, but that’s a good idea, so I’ll do it next week.
What I mean by this is, while reading my Bible today, I came across a rather interesting passage that goes like this:
Proverbs 6:16-19
‘There are six things that the LORD hates,
Seven that are an abomination to him;
Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
And hands that she'd innocent blood,
A heart that devises wicked plans,
Feet that make haste to run to evil,
A false witness who breathes out lies,
And one who sows discord among brothers.’
It’s a heavy passage, I know. Stick with me.
I’m going to unpack this one thing at a time.
The first thing is ‘the seven things the Lord hates.’ All is fine and dandy until we see, oh wait! ‘seven that are an abomination to him.’
Whhhhhaattt???
The English Oxford Dictionary says, ‘Abomination: a thing that causes disgust and hatred.’
But we all know God does not hate us, which is why I went a little deeper.
Abomination in Greek: βδέλυγμα
I know, it looks like a whole lot of nothing! But It’s so much more exciting than that! (I’m taking you on a history spin-off today!)
Greek letters have different names and meanings. It fascinates me to see just how intelligent earlier scientists were. I’m not going to bore you with every single Greek letter, but I am going to unpack each Greek letter into a string of words defining ancient abomination.
(also, Greek is written from right to left, exciting!)
β: Beta, representing balance, harmony, and cooperation
δ: Delta, representing change, transition, and difference.
ε: Epislon, representing harmony, equilibrium, and stability.
λ: Lambda, representing learning, discovery, and enlightenment.
υ: Upsilon, representing spiritual insight, intuition, and empathy.
γ: Gamma, representing transformation, knowledge, and growth.
μ: Mu, representing measurement, caltulation, and accuracy.
α: Alpha, representing beginnings, leadership, and strength.
From right to left, we get this:
’God is the beginning, measuring your knowledge, your intuition, your learning, and coming out with a stable change in the end equation.’
Do not ask me how I figured this out; I just know it took forever!
Now we know it means that God took these seven hateful things we did and turned them around into something we can learn from!
Yay!
That was fun!
Okay, moving on.
The first abominable thing: Hateful eyes.
People speak with their body language as much as they do with their mouths. This includes our eyes. We must be careful about how we act around others, where we look, what we say, and what we do. Our eyes are the leading factors of our faces. That is why they are so important.
The second: A lying tongue.
Lying is a hateful, disposable thing to do. It wreaks trust, hurts feelings, and destroys integrity. The Bible says in Matthew 15:18-20 ‘But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart comeevil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false whiteness, slander. These are what defiles a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone.’
The third: Hands that shed innocent blood.
Jesus talked about this in the passage I used above, but I’m going to repeat it: murder is a sin. Murder is a very heartless and horrendous thing to do. There are so many fiction books out there that put light on killing and taking innocent lives, but it is not, I repeat, not a practice that is reasonable or good.
The fourth: A heart that devises wicked plans.
Romans 8:7: ‘For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.’ Your ‘heart’ in this passage is not the muscle in your chest that pumps blood, it is your soul, your spirit, your personality that is derived from the thoughts in your mind. Wickedness is not something to dwell on. It is not something to think of day after day.
The fifth: Feet that make sense haste to run to evil.
This is the same as above. Running to evil takes thought—extensive thought that destroys your inner goodness and godliness, and it is a passionate hatefulness that no Christian should ever walk toward. Walk toward God. There is a reason we call it ‘walk with God,’ you know.
The sixth: A false witness that breathes out lies.
Have you ever watched a law movie? A movie where we walk with the attorney through multiple things people have done. Have you ever been in a courtroom and watched as the witness willingly told lies to the judge? It never ended well for him, did it? That is not only against federal law; it is against God’s law. Be true to what you say, true to what you know.
The seventh (the one thing God does not hate, but that is still abominable): One who sows Discord among brothers.
English Oxford Dictionary defines Discord as a disagreement between people. God tells us many times that your neighbour is your friend. Your brother is your friend. Your parents are your friends. Do not be making trouble among your friends. It lands you in the wrong places with bad people and ungodly things in God’s eyes.
*breathes heavily* wow! I think that actually just happened!
Thank you so much for reading! I hope you were able to take something useful away from this post and that you enjoyed reading it!
Stay Faithful,
Claudia
Learning biblical Greek would be fascinating!
Let's all remember:
God Is Love.
